Why does my dishwasher take three hours?

Answer

Because it is on an eco cycle, and eco cycles are long by design — the length is how they save energy, not a symptom of inefficiency.

The mechanism. Most of a dishwasher's energy goes into heating water, not into running the pump. A hotter wash cleans faster but costs more. An eco cycle therefore uses cooler water and compensates with time — longer soaking, longer wash phases, and detergent enzymes given time to work rather than being blasted off with heat.

Enzymatic detergents genuinely work better at moderate temperatures and over longer periods, which is why the approach succeeds rather than simply washing worse.

Eco cycles also use less water, reusing it across phases and reducing the volume that must be heated.

Why it became the default. EU energy labelling measures dishwashers on the eco programme, so manufacturers optimise that cycle for the rating. It is the most efficient programme on the machine, and typically the longest.

Is a quick cycle worse? It uses more energy and water and is intended for lightly soiled items washed soon after use. On heavily soiled or dried-on loads it will clean less well, which is the trade-off.

Other reasons a cycle runs long:

Cold water supply. Most machines heat from cold, and a cold inlet extends every heating phase.

Automatic or sensor programmes adjust duration based on how dirty the water is, so a heavy load genuinely takes longer.

Drying phase. Condensation drying, used by most modern machines, takes time because there is no heating element blasting air.

A faulty heating element or thermostat causes cycles to extend indefinitely as the machine waits for a temperature it cannot reach — worth suspecting if the duration has changed.

Running it overnight on eco is usually the sensible answer, and off-peak tariffs make it cheaper still.

Do not pre-rinse. Modern detergents and sensors work better with some soil present, and pre-rinsing wastes water for no benefit.
