What do washing machine programmes actually change?
Four variables, in different combinations: temperature, duration, drum movement, and spin speed. Every programme name is a preset of those four, and knowing that makes the list far less mysterious.
The four variables:
Temperature. Affects detergent activity and soil removal. Modern detergents work well at 30–40°C; higher temperatures matter mainly for heavy soiling, grease and hygiene concerns.
Duration. More time at temperature with detergent does more of the chemical work. This is why long programmes clean better than short ones at the same temperature — and it is the variable people most underestimate.
Drum movement. The rhythm and aggression of tumbling. Cotton programmes tumble vigorously; delicate and wool programmes rock gently with long pauses, which is the actual difference in most "gentle" cycles.
Spin speed, and the number of rinses.
What the common programmes really are:
Cotton — hot, long, vigorous, fast spin.
Synthetics / easy-care — moderate temperature, gentler tumbling, lower spin to limit creasing, sometimes extra rinse because synthetics hold detergent.
Delicates — low temperature, high water level, minimal agitation, low spin.
Wool / hand wash — very gentle rocking, cool, low spin. Wool felts from agitation and temperature change, not from water.
Eco — the counterintuitive one. It is long and cool, compensating for lower temperature with more time. It uses less energy overall because heating water is where nearly all the energy goes. It is also the programme manufacturers are tested on for energy labelling, which is why it is the default on many machines and why it takes three hours.
Quick wash — short and usually cool. Adequate for lightly soiled, freshly worn items; genuinely poor at anything else, and usually assumes a small load.
Practical notes: running a hot maintenance wash occasionally reduces the biofilm and odour that permanently cool washing encourages; overloading prevents movement and defeats every programme; and extra rinse is worth using for anyone with sensitive skin.
