Why do kettle elements fail, and does limescale matter?
Kettles fail for a small number of predictable reasons, and limescale is the underlying cause of most of them in hard water areas — through a mechanism that is more specific than "it clogs things up".
How a kettle works. A concealed element — a flat plate in modern kettles — heats water directly. A thermostat using a bimetallic disc detects steam and switches it off. A separate dry-boil cut-out protects against being switched on empty.
Why limescale causes failure. Scale is calcium carbonate, deposited from hard water when heated. It forms a layer on the element that acts as a thermal insulator. The element still produces the same heat but cannot transfer it to the water as quickly, so:
The element runs hotter than designed, accelerating its own degradation.
Boiling takes longer and uses more energy — a meaningfully thick layer can add noticeably to both.
Local hot spots form, which is where elements actually fail.
Descaling is therefore not cosmetic. It is the single maintenance action that extends a kettle's life.
The other failure modes:
The thermostat sticking, so the kettle either boils continuously or switches off early. Frequently caused by the lid not closing properly, so steam never reaches the sensor — worth checking before assuming the kettle is dead.
The dry-boil cut-out tripping after being switched on empty. Some reset once cool; many are one-shot devices.
Switch mechanism wear, which is mechanical and common.
Seal failure around the element, causing leaks from the base — at which point the kettle should be taken out of service immediately.
How to descale. White vinegar or citric acid, left to work, then rinsed thoroughly — several times, because residual acid will taint the next few cups. Proprietary descalers work identically. Check the manufacturer's guidance, as some plastics and finishes have restrictions.
Frequency depends entirely on water hardness — monthly in hard water areas, rarely in soft ones. A filter jug reduces the rate but does not eliminate it.
