Why does my child suddenly prefer one parent?
Because parental preference is a normal developmental phase, it is extremely common, and it is usually about the child's needs rather than about either parent's worth — though it is genuinely painful for the rejected one.
What it looks like. A child who was happy with both parents abruptly insists that only one may do bath time, bedtime, dressing or comfort. Attempts by the other parent are met with screaming and rejection. It typically appears somewhere between one and four, and can last weeks or months.
Why it happens:
Exercising control. A toddler controls almost nothing about their day. Choosing who does things is one of the few genuinely available decisions, and having a strong preference honoured is powerful.
Testing the secure base. Rejecting a parent and finding they remain present and loving is a way of confirming the relationship is unconditional.
Attachment prioritisation under stress. Children often narrow to one primary figure when tired, ill, or during upheaval — a new sibling, starting nursery, a house move. It is a stress response, not a verdict.
Familiarity and routine. The parent who happens to do the bedtime routine becomes the bedtime parent, and disruption to a memorised sequence is distressing.
It frequently switches, sometimes abruptly, which is worth knowing when it feels permanent.
What helps:
Do not withdraw. The most damaging response is for the rejected parent to step back — it confirms the pattern and reduces the contact that would resolve it. Stay involved, calmly.
Do not force it either. Overriding the child in the moment escalates distress. Aim for gradual reintroduction rather than confrontation.
Give the non-preferred parent their own activities — a specific outing, a particular game — rather than competing at the flashpoints.
The preferred parent should not undermine it by rescuing every time, which is exhausting for them and reinforces it.
Name it without judgement. Avoid "you don't love daddy" framing.
It passes. Persistent rejection alongside broader distress is worth raising with a health visitor.
