Why does a website work in one browser but not another?

Answer

Because browsers are independent implementations of enormous standards, and the differences are usually in one of a handful of places.

Extensions are the most common cause by far. Ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers and password managers modify pages, block requests and inject code. A site that fails in your everyday browser and works in another frequently works because the second has no extensions. Testing in a private window — which disables most extensions by default — is the fastest way to check this, and it costs nothing.

Cookies and cached data. Corrupted cookies, stale cached JavaScript or an expired session token produce failures in one browser only, since each keeps its own. Login loops and forms that will not submit are classic symptoms.

Privacy and tracking protection. Safari and Firefox block third-party cookies and cross-site storage by default, and Chrome's behaviour differs. Sites relying on third-party cookies for authentication, embedded content or payment frames break specifically in the stricter browsers. This is now one of the biggest genuine sources of divergence.

Genuine engine differences. Chrome and Edge use Blink, Safari uses WebKit, Firefox uses Gecko. Support for newer CSS and JavaScript features arrives at different times, and some features remain unimplemented in one engine for years. Sites tested only in Chrome — which many are, given its share — break elsewhere.

Browser or OS version. An outdated browser lacks features and current TLS support, and some sites will not load at all over old protocols.

Deliberate blocking. Some sites detect and restrict browsers, or serve different code based on the user agent.

A practical diagnostic order: private window, then disable extensions, then clear cookies for that site specifically, then update the browser, then try a different browser to confirm it is engine-related. The browser console (F12) usually shows the actual error.
