Answer

They are escalating enforcement actions with different targets: a takedown hits content, a strike hits your standing, and a ban hits your account.

Content removal (takedown). A specific post, video or comment is deleted or made unavailable. The account continues. Removal can be for violating the platform's own rules, or in response to a legal request — most commonly a copyright claim, where the process is separate from community guidelines entirely.

Reduced distribution is a distinct and quieter outcome: content stays up but is not recommended, is excluded from feeds or search, or has features disabled. Platforms sometimes describe it as limiting reach or making content ineligible for recommendation, and it is the largest category of enforcement by volume and the least visible to the user.

Strike or warning. A recorded violation attached to the account. Strikes usually:

Expire after a set period.

Escalate — the first may be a warning, subsequent ones bringing temporary restrictions on posting, live streaming or monetisation.

Accumulate to termination at a threshold.

Temporary suspension. The account is locked for a period. Content is normally preserved.

Ban or termination. The account is permanently removed. Depending on the platform, associated accounts may be removed too, and creating a replacement account may itself be a violation — ban evasion.

Demonetisation is separate again, affecting revenue rather than visibility or access, and frequently applies to content that breaks no rules but is deemed unsuitable for advertisers.

What to know practically:

Appeal promptly. Appeal windows are limited, and an unappealed action generally stands.

Automated systems make most decisions. The volume makes human review of everything impossible, and false positives are common, particularly for satire, reclaimed language, educational content about a topic, and documentation of harm.

Download your data before it becomes inaccessible. A terminated account may take years of content with it, and export tools stop working once you are locked out. This is the single most important practical precaution, and it must be done in advance.

Regulation has increased requirements for notice, reasons and appeal routes in some jurisdictions.
