What is the difference between a 'for you' feed and a 'following' feed?
A following feed shows content from accounts you chose. A for you feed shows content the platform predicts you will engage with, mostly from accounts you have never heard of. The difference is who decides what you see.
Following feed — sometimes called chronological or subscriptions:
Bounded by your choices. You only see what you opted into.
Predictable. Post something and your followers can see it.
Under your control, adjusted by following and unfollowing.
Limited by your own curation, so discovery is slow and it can become stale.
For you feed — recommendations:
Unbounded. Anything in the platform's catalogue is eligible.
Personalised by inferred preference, based on what you watched, how long, what you rewatched, skipped, liked or shared — with behaviour weighted far more heavily than stated preference. What you watch matters more than what you say you want.
Excellent at discovery, which is genuinely its strength and why it won.
Volatile and opaque. You cannot tell why something appeared, and you cannot reliably influence it except by changing your behaviour.
Why platforms moved to recommendations. They demonstrably increase time spent, they remove the cold-start problem for new users who follow nobody, and they break the dependence on follower counts — which shifts power from established accounts to the platform itself. That last point is the one least discussed and probably most important.
What it changed for creators. Reach became decoupled from audience size. A new account can reach millions; an account with a million followers can reach almost none. This is liberating for newcomers and precarious for everyone, and it makes building a following far less meaningful as security.
The criticisms: optimising for engagement favours content that provokes rather than informs; filter effects narrow what you are shown over time; it is harder to deliberately seek something out; and users lose the ability to curate their own experience.
Practical control: most platforms retain a following feed, frequently harder to reach and not the default. Setting it as your default where possible is the main available lever, alongside explicit "not interested" signals.
