Answer

QA looks for things that are broken; playtesting looks for things that are working as designed and still failing. They are different disciplines answering different questions, and conflating them is a common and expensive mistake.

Quality assurance. Finds defects against a specification: crashes, visual errors, broken logic, performance problems, platform certification failures, and regressions after changes. Testers write reproducible bug reports, and the standard is objective — it either works or it does not.

Playtesting. Finds experience problems: players who are confused, bored, frustrated, cheated, or who never discover a feature that works perfectly. Nothing is broken; the design is not landing.

What playtesting reveals that nothing else does:

Where players get lost, despite the route being clear to everyone who built it.

Which mechanics go unused, because players never realised they existed.

Difficulty spikes, which designers cannot feel because they are expert at their own game.

Mistaken assumptions, where players confidently believe something untrue about the systems.

Where enjoyment drops, which is the hardest thing to see from inside.

Why the developer cannot substitute for it. The team has irreversible knowledge of the game. They cannot un-know where the door is, and this blindness is complete rather than partial — it is the single strongest argument for testing with strangers.

How it is actually run:

Observe silently. Intervening destroys the data, and the instinct to help is the hardest thing to suppress.

Give a task, not instructions.

Watch behaviour, not opinions. What players say they want is unreliable; what they do is not. The frequently quoted principle is that players are excellent at identifying problems and poor at proposing solutions.

Test with the right people, including those unfamiliar with the genre.

Test early and repeatedly, on rough builds.

Related methods: analytics and telemetry at scale, focus testing, surveys, and soft launches — which are live playtests with real money attached.
