What is internal linking for?

Answer

Three distinct jobs: helping people navigate, helping search engines discover pages, and distributing ranking signals around a site. It is among the most underused levers in SEO, largely because it is unglamorous and entirely within your control.

Discovery. Search engines find pages by following links. A page with no internal links pointing to it — an orphan page — may never be found, regardless of its quality. Orphan pages are surprisingly common on large sites and are invisible without a crawl.

Distributing authority. Link value flows through internal links as well as external ones. Pages that many internal links point to are signalled as more important. This means you can direct strength toward the pages that matter commercially, which is the part most sites never deliberately do — internal linking usually just reflects the navigation template.

Establishing relationships. Links between related pages help establish which pages cover which topics and how they connect, supporting topical coverage.

Anchor text matters, and is fully under your control. Unlike external links, you choose the wording. Descriptive anchor text tells both users and search engines what the destination covers. "Click here" wastes the opportunity entirely, and "read more" repeated across a page is equally useless.

What good internal linking looks like:

Contextual links within body content, which carry more weight than footer or sidebar links repeated site-wide.

Linking from strong pages to pages needing support — identify which of your pages attract external links and link from them to commercially important pages.

Shallow depth. Important pages reachable within a few clicks of the homepage.

Varied, descriptive anchor text, without forcing exact-match phrasing repeatedly, which reads unnaturally.

Links in both directions between related pages.

What to avoid: enormous numbers of links on a page, which dilutes each; linking through JavaScript click handlers rather than anchor elements; linking to redirected or broken URLs; and the outdated practice of nofollowing internal links to sculpt flow, which has not worked as intended for many years.

Auditing for orphans and broken internal links is a quick, high-yield exercise.
