Answer

A cleaning process that circulates water and chemicals at high flow through a central heating system to remove magnetite sludge — and it is genuinely useful in specific circumstances and routinely sold when it is not needed.

What the sludge is. Steel radiators corrode internally where oxygen is present, producing black iron oxide. It circulates, then settles in low-flow areas — the bottoms of radiators and the heat exchanger — restricting flow and insulating surfaces.

The symptoms that genuinely indicate it:

Radiators cold at the bottom and warm at the top. This is the classic sign — sludge settling. Cold at the top and warm at the bottom is air, and needs bleeding, not flushing. Confusing these is common.

Some radiators not heating while others do, after balancing has been ruled out.

Noisy boiler, kettling, or frequent cycling.

Black water when a radiator is bled or drained.

Repeated pump or valve failures.

When it is not needed: a system that heats evenly; a new system; and — importantly — as a routine annual service item, which it is not.

The alternatives, which are frequently more appropriate: a chemical clean, circulating cleaner for a period and then draining, which is cheaper and adequate for mild cases; and balancing, which resolves a great many uneven-heating complaints at no material cost and is skipped surprisingly often.

What should be done afterwards, and frequently is not: adding a corrosion inhibitor, without which the problem simply returns, and fitting a magnetic filter on the return pipe, which captures magnetite continuously and is the single most cost-effective preventive measure available. Both should be part of the job.

Before a new boiler. Manufacturers typically require the system to be cleaned before installation, and warranties can depend on it — which is a legitimate reason to have it done and also where it is most often upsold.

Be cautious of: quotes without a diagnosis, pressure to decide immediately, and claims that it will transform bills. It restores a degraded system; it does not improve a healthy one.
