What does personal accident insurance actually pay?
Personal accident insurance pays fixed benefits for specified injuries or death caused by an accident. It is structurally different from most insurance, and that difference explains both its appeal and its limitations.
How it works. Rather than indemnifying an actual loss — restoring you to your previous financial position — it pays a predetermined sum on a defined event. The policy contains a schedule listing amounts, typically expressed as percentages of a capital sum:
Accidental death — the full sum.
Permanent total disablement — the full sum or a high proportion.
Loss of a limb or sight — a scheduled percentage.
Specified injuries — fractures, burns, loss of hearing — at defined amounts.
Temporary total disablement — a weekly benefit for a limited period, subject to a deferment period.
Hospitalisation — a daily amount.
Because it pays a benefit rather than indemnifying a loss, it is one of the exceptions to the contribution rule — you can hold several personal accident policies and each can pay in full. Indemnity policies covering property cannot work this way.
The significant limitations:
Accidents only. Illness is excluded entirely — no cancer, no heart attack, no stroke, no back problems, no mental health conditions. Since illness causes far more long-term inability to work than accidents do, this is the central weakness, and it is why advisers generally regard income protection as the more useful product.
Definitions are strict, particularly for permanent total disablement, which often requires inability to perform any occupation.
Common exclusions: hazardous activities and sports, aviation other than as a passenger, intoxication, self-inflicted injury, war, and pre-existing conditions.
Age limits and reducing benefits for older policyholders.
Where it is genuinely useful: as a cheap supplement, where it is provided free through an employer or membership, or in physical occupations. As primary protection it is generally inadequate.
