What are cloud saves, and why do they conflict?

Answer

Save files stored on a remote service so progress follows you between devices — and conflicts arise because the system must decide which of two versions is correct, which it frequently cannot do reliably.

How it works. The client uploads save data after play and downloads it before. When it works, progress transfers seamlessly.

Why conflicts occur:

Playing offline. Progress is made locally without uploading. Play elsewhere and both copies advance from the same point, producing two divergent versions with no way to merge them.

Upload failing silently on exit — the application closed, the connection dropped, or the system shut down before synchronisation completed.

Playing on a second device before the first has finished uploading, which is easy with modern suspend-and-resume behaviour where the first device may not have exited properly at all.

Clock differences, since the system frequently decides by timestamp — and a device with an incorrect clock can make an older save appear newer.

Why it cannot simply be merged. A save is a snapshot of interdependent state — inventory, position, quest flags, world changes. Combining two divergent snapshots produces an inconsistent world, not a combined one. So the only safe options are choosing one or keeping both, which is why you are asked.

What to do when prompted. The dialogue usually shows playtime, timestamp and sometimes progress details. Playtime is generally more reliable than timestamp, since clocks are wrong more often than playtime is.

Choose deliberately and slowly — this is one of the few prompts where the wrong answer destroys hours of work irreversibly.

How to avoid it:

Exit games properly rather than suspending or closing the system.

Wait for synchronisation to complete before switching devices — most platforms indicate it.

Check connectivity before playing offline, and be aware that you have.

Back up local saves for anything you would be upset to lose. Cloud saves are convenience, not backup, and they can propagate a corrupted or deleted save to every device.

Know where saves are stored, since some games do not use cloud saving at all and some store only part of the data.

Storage quotas apply, and older saves may be removed.
