How do you spot fake followers?

Answer

Through patterns that are difficult to fake convincingly at scale — and the signals are consistent enough that auditing an account is genuinely possible without specialist tools.

The most informative signals:

Engagement rate wildly out of line with follower count. An account with a large following and very few likes or comments is the clearest indicator. Compare against typical rates for that follower band on that platform.

Growth pattern. Genuine growth is irregular but continuous, with spikes after particular posts. Purchased followers appear as sudden vertical steps — thousands within a day or two, with no corresponding content that would explain it — frequently followed by a plateau or decline as inactive accounts are purged by the platform.

Follower profile quality. Sampling the follower list reveals accounts with no profile photograph, no posts, generic usernames with random numbers, and following thousands while being followed by almost nobody.

Audience location mismatch. A creator posting in English about a UK-specific subject whose followers are concentrated in countries with no plausible interest is a strong signal, and this is frequently the most visible discrepancy in analytics.

Comment quality. Generic comments — single emoji, "nice post", "great content" — repeated across posts, frequently from the same accounts.

Engagement timing. Genuine engagement arrives over hours and days; purchased or pod engagement arrives in a concentrated burst immediately after posting and then stops abruptly.

Likes without other actions. Saves, shares and profile visits are harder and more expensive to fake than likes, so a profile with high likes and negligible saves is suspect.

Why it matters beyond fraud. Fake followers damage the account's own performance: ranking systems observe that a large proportion of followers never engage, and conclude the content is not interesting — so reach falls. Buying followers reduces genuine reach, which is the outcome purchasers least expect.

What to ask for in a partnership: screenshots of the creator's own analytics, showing reach, audience demographics and location; recent post performance rather than best-ever figures; and results from previous campaigns.

Some fake followers are not the account's fault — accounts are targeted maliciously, and purges affect everyone.
