Answer

By transferring in the right order and knowing which things do not transfer automatically — because the standard migration tools handle most of it and silently miss the few items that are hardest to recover.

What the built-in transfer does well: apps, settings, photos, messages, contacts, call history, wallpapers and most preferences — either device-to-device, from a cloud backup, or by cable, which is usually fastest and most complete.

What does not transfer, and this is the list that matters:

Two-factor authenticator codes. Authenticator apps frequently do not migrate with a standard transfer, and losing them locks you out of every account they protect. Move them deliberately, before wiping the old phone — most apps have an export or account-transfer function, and doing it after the fact is impossible.

Messaging app history, which typically requires the app's own backup, taken on the old phone first, and which may not transfer between operating systems at all.

Passwords not in a manager, including anything saved only in a browser profile that is not syncing.

eSIM profiles, which need transferring or reissuing by the network — and which can leave you without service if done in the wrong order.

App data for apps without cloud accounts, including game progress and offline notes.

Health and fitness data, in some cases, and only via a full encrypted backup.

Payment cards, which must be re-added.

Downloaded media, which usually needs redownloading.

The order that avoids problems:

Update both devices first, since transfer tools are version-sensitive.

Take a full backup of the old phone, and verify it exists.

Export authenticator codes and messaging backups.

Transfer, on power and on the same network, allowing hours rather than minutes.

Verify everything on the new phone — sign into the key accounts, check two-factor works, check messages — before doing anything to the old one.

Keep the old phone intact for a week, which costs nothing and repeatedly proves useful.

Then wipe it properly, signing out of the account first so it is not locked to you.
