Are messaging apps actually private?

Answer

It depends on what is encrypted, by default, and who holds the keys — and the differences between popular apps are larger than their marketing suggests.

What end-to-end encryption means. Messages are encrypted on your device and decrypted only on the recipient's. The provider carries ciphertext it cannot read. This is a meaningful guarantee and it covers less than people assume.

How the major apps differ in practice:

Some apply end-to-end encryption to everything by default, including group chats and calls.

Some encrypt one-to-one chats by default but not group chats or cloud-synced chats, where the provider holds keys.

Some require you to start a "secret" conversation manually, meaning the default conversation is not end-to-end encrypted at all — which is the single most misunderstood point in this area.

Check what the default is, because almost nobody changes it.

What encryption does not protect, which matters more than the algorithm:

Metadata — who you messaged, when, how often, from where, and group membership. This is frequently as revealing as content, is retained by most providers, and is obtainable by legal process. Apps differ enormously in how little metadata they keep, and that is arguably the sharper distinction between them.

Backups. An unencrypted cloud backup of your chat history defeats the encryption entirely — for you and for everyone who messaged you.

The endpoints. A compromised phone reads messages after decryption; spyware makes encryption irrelevant.

The other participant, who can screenshot, forward or back up.

Linked devices, which extend the trust boundary.

What to actually do: check whether encryption is on by default; encrypt or disable cloud backups; turn on disappearing messages for sensitive conversations; verify safety numbers with important contacts, which detects interception; keep the device updated and locked; and review linked devices periodically.

Open-source, independently audited implementations with minimal metadata retention are the stronger choice where it matters.
